Arlene Erma Batt

Heaven gained another saint on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, when Arlene Erma (Hulbert) Batt went home to be with Jesus. Her memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, September 15, 2025, at Central Church of Christ in Gering, Nebraska, with Pastor Lyle Hinebauch officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the Central Church of Christ Ladies of the Lord. Arlene was born on August 7, 1932, to Lewis and Opal (Leonard) Hulbert at their home in Gering. She was a life-long member of Central Church of Christ. Arlene attended school in Gering until her senior year, when the family moved to Minatare. She graduated from Minatare High in 1950. She then furthered her education by receiving her teaching certificate and taught at Roosevelt Elementary School until she started her family.

She married Marvin Batt in 1951, and to this union, four children were born. The family lived in Gering until 1960, when they moved to a farm southwest of Melbeta. Arlene and Marvin farmed until 1985, at which time they retired and moved back to Gering.

Arlene worked outside the home most of her life. She was a checker at Alexander's Supermarket until she renewed her teaching credentials and taught at Highland School. She then worked at various office jobs and finished as a sales clerk at Ample Annie's. Arlene loved the farm life, and especially driving the beet truck during beet harvest. She was very active in her children's lives, always volunteering to help with fundraisers, taking carloads of kids to out-of-town games, and sponsoring the concession stand at sports activities. She and Marvin even transported a car full of girls to the state basketball tournament in 1970. She was a Den Mother for the boys’ Cub Scout dens and also a 4-H Leader for not only her children, but also for a group of high school girls who wanted to learn to knit.

The most important thing in her life was her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved having them spend the night, stop by for a visit, or come by after school to wait for evening school activities. Arlene made sure the cookie drawer was always stocked for their visits. When the great-grandchildren came along, she got a play kitchen that became a favorite for all of them.

Arlene is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Jama Batt and Kevin and Linda Batt all of Melbeta; daughters, Cindy and Sheri Batt of Scottsbluff; seven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and was very blessed and thrilled to live to have a great-great-granddaughter. Other survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Donna Hulbert; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Punk and Glennie Batt; sister-in-law, Karen Batt; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Opal Hulbert; in-laws, Melvin and Lydia Batt; husband, Marvin in 2008; grandson, Cory; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Myrt Hulbert; brother-in-law, Jim Batt; niece, Juli Harden; and nephew, Bradd Batt.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Northfield Retirement Community-Residency Care Center for their care of Arlene over the last seven years, especially her nurse, Hollie, activity coordinators, Ina and Josie, and her transportation gurus, Tami and Bev.
