Don was born August 10, 1935, in North Platte, Nebraska to Harry Richard Kelso and Eva Mae (Powell) Kelso. He graduated from North Platte High School.

Don married Arlene Faye Bedker on February 24, 1953. Four children were born to this union: Michael Richard, Lauren Lee, Lew Donald, and Donna Faye.

Don worked for Rush Creek Cattle Co, but while there he suffered a broken back injury that he endured for the remainder of his life.  He later went to work in the McCook, Nebraska area where he drove a truck in the oil field and was a part time mechanic.  The family moved to Bridgeport, and he drove a truck for Bridgeport Equipment, a job that allowed him to travel to many states.  He also managed an irrigation ditch for years.  Don purchased a truck and moved mobile homes for several years and later built a trailer and hauled grain.  He eventually constructed a shop for the truck and trailer and did mechanic work.

Don played the guitar and liked western music. He enjoyed hunting trips with his friends when in better health. Don was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 71 years, Arlene; and sons, Michael, Lauren, and Lew.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Eva; and daughter, Donna.
