Donald Bruce Mack

Donald Bruce Mack, age 91, of Harrison, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at home and went to join his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 29, 2026. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Harrison, with Pastor Martin Leeper officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will follow at Harrison Cemetery in Harrison. Memorials may be made to Memorial United Methodist Church or Brookestone Home Health & Hospice. Don was born on January 27, 1935, in Crawford, Nebraska, to Gerry Elbridge and Marie (Cammenzind) Mack. He attended district 31 and graduated from Sioux County High School in 1953. Apart from a brief three-month period working in Arkansas and Wyoming, Don spent his entire life in Sioux County.

He attended a country dance in Glenn, Nebraska, in September of 1952, with his friend Bill Corbin, where he met the love of his life, Betty Irene Mansfield. Don shared with her that he had been smitten ever since seeing her at her 8th grade graduation. The two were married on June 16, 1954, and shared 72 years of wonderful marriage.

The couple spent a brief time living in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, before returning to Sioux County. He worked for several ranches until 1956, when they settled on the Mack Ranch, originally homesteaded by his grandfather, Charles Cammenzind.

Don and Betty were blessed with five children; David, Cindy Jo, Billy, Donny, and Lilly. Their home was always open to family and friends. The Stamen and Reece nieces and nephews lived with them during their high school years, and the Perlinski kids spent much of their youth and early adulthood with them. Don even called Ida his “other daughter”. These shared years fostered lifelong friendships and cherished memories that will be held dear forever.

He worked diligently throughout his life, beginning with 10 years at the Gateway service station, followed by work for Water Pipeline Construction. Don joined the Sioux County Department of Roads in 1974. In 1980, Don and Betty purchased and operated the Village Barn and Sage Motel for 12 years. He subsequently joined the maintenance staff at the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument and also served as a rural mail carrier, continuing his work until 2025 at the age 90.

Don truly lived life to the fullest as a devoted and adoring father. There are wonderful memories of trips to Evans Plunge, Fourth of July picnics in Crawford, and a 4-H trip to Indiana with junior high schoolers, just to name a few. He was a man of many talents and endless character. Don loved dancing, going to the rodeo, visiting farm and ranch exhibits, fixing anything that needed repaired including working on the pivots with his son Bill, and bringing joy to those around him. He was a natural jokester, delightfully ornery and silly, and always ready with a smile. In the past few years on any given afternoon, you could count on finding him tuned into the Weather Channel or catching a rodeo. Don grounded his life in faith above all else as an active and dedicated member of the United Methodist church.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Betty Mack; children, Billy (Deb) Mack and Lilly (Chuck) Fisher; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cindy Jo; sons, David and Donny Mack; parents, Gerry and Marie Mack; stepmother, Francis Hourt Funk Mack; brother, Charles Mack; and sister, Susanne Reece.
