Douglas Datel

January 10, 1960 — December 17, 2022

Douglas B. Datel, age 62, of Mitchell, Nebraska, died Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.  Services will be announced when available and cremation has taken place in accordance with his wishes. Memorials may be made in care of the family and will be designated at a later date. Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.reverencefuneralparlor.com.

Doug was born January 10, 1960, in Scottsbluff to Robert and Ann (Barton) Datel.  He graduated from Mitchell High School before attending the Brown Institute in Minneapolis for radio broadcasting.

He met Deborah McMillen while on a traveling work crew.  They were united in marriage and welcomed two sons, Joseph and James. The family made their home in the Scottsbluff area.

Doug created a life for over 30 years as a truck driver.  He had stints with other jobs, but trucking was his true calling and what he enjoyed the most.

He was a music enthusiast his entire life. Doug traveled to various concerts in his younger years with friends and family, including watching his Uncle Randy in concert several times as a member of The Eagles. Bowling was one of his favorite past times, especially when he and his sons bowled together on a league. Doug also liked being outdoors, fishing, camping, and golfing.  It wasn’t unusual though to find Doug simply hanging out, playing video games, and relaxing with his family.

Doug was very blunt and sarcastic, traits that at times were hard to handle, but also traits that made him the irreplaceable man he was.  He had an incredible memory and always a story to share. His stories and company will be dearly missed by those who are left to cherish his memory.

Survivors include his mother, Ann Datel; sons, Joseph (Kelanie) Datel and James (Darcy) Datel; grandchildren, Reese and Rylee Datel, James Lauder, and Dillinger Datel; sister, Bobbi (Brad) Vonholt; nephew, Ben (Tabitha) Howell; niece, Sara (Kyle) Dietz; aunt, Jennifer Meisner; cousins, Dana (Lana) Meisner, Eric (Stacey) Meisner, and Heather Meisner; along with many other cousins, extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
