Douglas Clark Leafgreen

Douglas Clark Leafgreen, age 78, of Gering, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at his home with his family by his side. His memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Harvest Valley Church in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, with Pastor Brandon Yuill officiating. A private family graveside will be held at a later date at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Doug was born on August 20, 1947, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Roger Franklin Sr. and Lenora (Behm) Leafgreen. He graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1965. Doug began his college education at Scottsbluff Junior College and finished his BA at Chadron State College.

He married Melody Janeen Frank on December 21, 1973, at Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsbluff. Before Doug began his career in the insurance industry, he taught for Minatare Public Schools for three years. He then worked for Lincoln National Life, ICI based in Omaha, and ended his insurance career at RCI.

Doug had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church since 1974. He served as a deacon and youth leader, taught Sunday school, and volunteered at the Jeremiah House and anywhere else he could be of service. Doug was also active in city and state government. He served as a Gering City Councilman for twelve years and Mayor of Gering for four years. Doug was president of the League of Municipalities, a Scotts Bluff County Commissioner, and was appointed to the State Highway Roads Commission by Governor Mike Johanns, on which he served for twenty-seven years.

He loved to golf, fish, and hunt as often as he could. Even toward the end of his life, Doug sat with his family and friends and reminisced about his hunting and fishing adventures. He enjoyed taking his family to the mountains where he helped create lifelong memories for his children and grandchildren. Doug was a kind and dedicated man who loved the Lord, his family, friends, and community. He worked hard to provide for his wife and family. As his wife Melody became wheelchair-bound, he diligently cared for her needs daily.

Survivors include his wife, Melody Leafgreen; children, Toby (Kelly) Leafgreen and Nicole (Jonathan) Hoesch; grandchildren, Alaira (Ricky) Hayes, Hunter and Gibson Leafgreen, Anna (Jose) Mireles, Jonathan Jr. (Aubri) Hoesch, Dalton Fryman, and Ava Barry; and sister, Susan (Mark) Masterton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Sr. and Lenora Leafgreen; brother, Roger Leafgreen Jr.; and in-laws, LeRoy and Inez Frank.
