Dwight Ray Deines

Dwight Ray Deines, age 79, of Mitchell, Nebraska, passed away surrounded by his loved ones at his home on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 2, 2026, at Reverence Funeral Parlor in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, with Pastor Cliff Transmeier officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Mitchell City Cemetery in Mitchell, Nebraska. Memorials may be made in care of the Mitchell Fire Department. Dwight was born on March 31, 1947, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to David E. and Anna Marie (Meyer) Deines. He attended Sunflower School and graduated in 1965.

He entered the workforce early in life and started farming with his father in the Mitchell area until the mid-80’s. Dwight’s entrepreneurial spirit then led him to open his own haying business as well as a lawn care service. In 1995, Dwight began working for the City of Mitchell as a sexton for the Mitchell City Cemetery. He and his significant other, Susann, later cared for the Mitchell Valley Cemetery as well. Dwight would jokingly say that his neighbors at work were pretty easy to get along with. He loved his work as a cemetery caretaker for 21 wonderful years until his retirement on his birthday in 2016.

Dwight was a member of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department and served many years as the assistant chief. He was also part of the Sons of The American Legion and a member of the Mitchell Drainage Ditch Board.

Dwight was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved trips to Sturgis with his friends and family. He enjoyed riding side-by-sides with his closest companions among the trails. Dwight was always up for entertaining guests, especially if it meant gathering in his shop for a beer. He will be missed by many.

Survivors include his soulmate, Susann Craig; nephew, Dale (Jenny) Batt; niece, Sheila (Mark) Yung; great nieces and nephews, Jesse (Kassidy) Young, Lindsey Prosinski, Corbin (Teagan) Batt, and Ryan Yung; and great-great-niece, Addison Young.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Anna Deines; sister, Betty Batt; and brother-in-law, Wayne Batt.
