Isabela was born on February 1, 1951, in Abilene, Texas to Isabel and Maria (Rodriguez) Gonzales.
She married Elvariste Gomez and became the proud mother of nine children. Isabel was a hard-working mother and wife. The family traveled all across the US from Washington state to Florida doing migrant work. Her days often started before anyone else as she rose to make breakfast for everyone, sometimes cooking right in the field. Isabela’s cooking brought the family together, even years later when her children were grown. The family looked forward to her cookout breakfasts during camping trips, barbecue get-togethers, and especially the holiday meals she prepared for all. Tamales, pork chili, and her signature homemade bean and potato tacos were some of the family favorites.
Isabela had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, and collecting house plants over the years. She was always up for playing a round of loteria with frijoles as her game pieces and occasionally sipped on an ice-cold margarita or Michelob Ultra. She liked dancing and was a big fan of Elvis Presley and Freddie Fender music. Isabela was known to keep a clean household, and she raised her children and grandchildren also to be tidy and respectful of her space. Although she was strict, love was consistently at the root of her actions and words. She was blunt and honest with her opinions and advice, truly wanting the best for everyone, even if her words weren’t what they wanted to hear. She deeply loved her family and would do anything she could for them.
Survivors include her children, Nina Gonzales, Daisy Gomez, Margie Gonzales, Elvariste Gomez Jr., Arlene Alarcon, Ricky Ricardo Gomez, Sherry Serrano, Isabel Robert Gomez, Marcella Melikian, and Jose Gomez; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Willie Gonzales and Santos Gonzales; sisters, Rosa Frausto, Janie Gonzales, and Maryann Gonzales; many nieces and nephews; her beloved dog, Chico; and several extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isabel and Maria; husband, Elvariste Gomez Sr.; brothers, Hector Gonzales, Joe Gonzales, and Frank Gonzales; and sisters, Lula Gonzales and Minga Rangel.
