Joann S. Deines, 85, of Bayard, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023, at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2023, at Faith United Church of Christ in Bayard with Pastor Tom Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Bayard Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made in care of the family and will be designated at a later date. Joann was born February 13, 1938, in Fairview, Montana to Henry and Helen (Buxbaum) Schneider. She grew up in Morrill, Nebraska where she attended public school.
She married the love of her life, Harvey Deines, on February 12, 1956. Five children were born to this union: Carol, Glenda, Harvey, Cheryl, and James.
Joann and Harvey farmed for several years in the Bayard area. Joann worked in a variety of businesses during her career. She worked at Western Sugar during campaigns and later Bayard Public Schools until her retirement.
She was a member of Hope Congregational Church for over forty years. Faith United Church of Christ warmly welcomed Joann when she became a member after the closing of Hope Congregational.
Joann was active in her garden and was awarded the Golden Spade Award at one time. She enjoyed crafting, quilting, and crocheting and created many beautiful afghans and doilies. Crossword puzzles were another favorite pastime of Joann’s as well as jigsaw puzzles. She could easily complete a 1000-piece puzzle in three days.
Survivors include her children, Carol (Paul) Runge of Greeley, CO, Glenda (John) Heinrich of Gering, Harvey (Linda) Deines of Black Hawk, SD, Sheri (Scott) Harms of Hudson, WI and Jim (Tonya) Deines of Bayard; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; brothers, Jerry (Joan) Schneider of Ocala, FL and Dennis (Laurie) Schneider of Santee, CA; along with other extended family members and friends.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Helen Schneider; and husband of 63 years, Harvey, in 2019.
