John was born on October 21, 1946, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Raymond David and Lillie Elaine (Reed) Hennings. He went to a local country school West of Hemingford as a kid, where he participated in 4-H and was an active member of the Congregational Church in Hemingford, Nebraska. John helped his parents on the farm and learned a strong work ethic that followed him throughout his life. He graduated from Hemingford High School in 1964 and then went on to attend trade school in Milford, Nebraska, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree.

He moved to Scottsbluff following his education and began working in construction. John married Carol Lynn Johnson in 1968 and together they welcomed two children, Eric and Michael. His experience in construction led John to enter a partnership with Clyde West building houses. John worked independently for a short while before teaming up with Don Lynch to create Hennings Construction, specializing in installing municipal utilities. Following Don's passing, John continued to run the business alongside his sons and eventually turned the business over to them. He continued to do some construction projects even into his retirement with the help of his cousins, Don and Roy, and friends, Jack and Don.

John loved to travel, taking frequent family trips and making wonderful memories along the way. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, listening to music, and having coffee with friends in the mornings.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Hennings; brother, Gary (Lee) Hennings; sons, Eric (Robin) and Michael (Tiffanie) Hennings; grandchildren, Marc (Shawna) Hennings, Amber (Derek) Moore, Ashley (Nate) Urdiales, Chelsie Hennings, Tanner Hennings, and Olivia Taylor; and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lillie Hennings; brother, Kenneth Hennings; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ann and Lamar Johnson; and sister-in-law, Cathryn Spath.
