Jon Needs, 92, of Morrill, Nebraska, passed away, Monday, November 17, 2025, at his home surrounded by family. A memorial graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Craig Collins officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving a donation to the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department or the Morrill American Legion Post #10. Jon was born to Hazel and Vernon Needs of Morrill. He was raised by his grandparents, Blanche and Emmett Logan, after his family relocated to Idaho, Jon elected to finish his education in the Morrill School System.
He graduated from Morrill High School in 1951. Jon was a Morrill High School three sport athlete, played basketball for the Denver Post Basketball Club Team, and played on several softball leagues in the valley.
He served in the US. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.
Jon married the love of his life, Shirley Alt, on October 22, 1960. Together, they had four children: Greg, Mike, Kim, and Shanna.
Jon worked several years for Pathfinder Irrigation District, was co-owner (with Frank Flock) of J&F Mfg. in Morrill. He was the owner of his home-based business, La-Shan Company, which he operated for several years.
Jon was known for his welding ability and artistic metalwork. The old-iron pipe cross and grave markers at the Sheep Creek Cemetery north of Henry along with the Sunset Memorial Park sign west of Scottsbluff, are just a few of his handcrafted metal artworks.
Jon was active in the Morrill Community for several years, including the Morrill Volunteer Firefighter, retired with 61 years of Service and the American Legion Post #10 and where he cooked hamburgers for several years on his homemade grill for community functions.
Jon loved the outdoors, especially goose hunting and fishing. One of his passions was building goose blinds. In his younger years, Jon enjoyed boating, waterskiing, and floating the Wyoming Rivers with family and friends. Jon loved animals and had numerous hunting dogs over the years. One of his fondest memories was his Bluetick Hound, Lester. And his most recent beloved Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Bud.
Jon was one who "knew no stranger", his storytelling, sense of humor and kindness will be missed.
Survivors include his children, Greg (Kerrie) Needs, Mike (Michele) Needs, Kim Needs, and Shanna (Marvin) Brown. Jon was blessed with four grandchildren: Shaely (Bri) Needs, Gordon (Bailey) Needs, Brody and Brooklyn Brown. Jon was recently blessed with his first great-grandson, Colter Jon Needs.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; his siblings, Richard and Paul; and his grandparents.
