Len was born on December 12, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Leonard Garner and Lois Alberta (Hammond) Tabor. He grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and some of his fondest childhood memories included visits to Hollywood to see his movie-star sister, Joan Tabor. Len graduated from Washington High School in 1963, where his father taught mathematics.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in 1967 and was a member of Delta Tau Delta. Len went on to receive his Juris Doctor degree in 1970 from the University of South Dakota School of Law. He was a member of Delta Theta Pi, served as vice president of the Young Republicans, and participated in the Strollers Theatre Club. Len proudly served his country in the United States Air Force through the Air National Guard.
Len’s first marriage was to Kathy Kenzy, and from this union their daughter Stacie was born. He later married the love of his life, Kathy Rubino, with whom he shared 48 wonderful years of marriage. The couple welcomed another daughter, Tiffany. Len and Kathy’s marriage was a beautiful story of love and adventurous fun. Their lives were marked by devotion to their children and grandchildren, and a deep enjoyment of time spent with friends and family. Len took great pride in celebrating his family and their accomplishments above all else.
He was a brilliant lawyer for an extraordinary total of 55 years which earned him a deep admiration within the legal community. Len cared deeply for his clients and every person who crossed his path in his daily work. He valued the relationships he built with others just as much as the work itself.
Len was active in numerous professional and community organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Federal District Court of Nebraska, the Nebraska Criminal Defender’s Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Scottsbluff County Bar Association. Len served as president of both the Scottsbluff Bar Association and the Gering Sertoma Club. He was honored with Strathmore’s “Who’s Who” Honorary Award in 2009 and again in 2018, receiving recognition for his very high rating in both legal ability and ethical standards.
Len was known for his vibrant personality and love of life. He delighted in telling great, and often silly, dad jokes to anyone who would listen. He wrote and performed in melodramas and other theatrical productions for the community in his early years. The performers and the audience were part of the experience during his shows and knew they would be witnessing something special. Len, being a passionate supporter of the arts, was especially remembered for his wit and theatrical flair during his “Year-End Legal Update” for the Scottsbluff Bar Association, famously featuring Carnac the Magnificent.
He was an avid reader that fed his curiosity through fact, fiction, and all things weird, finding daily joy and comfort in the pages of a good book. When the weather was nice, he could often be found outside landscaping. Len used his artistic eye and green thumb to make his yard something truly unique and loved sharing it with family and friends. He loved all things games, especially poker with his buddies, cards with friends, golfing, and playing Charades, Hide the Thimble, Clue, and Trivia with family. Len was a lifelong Nebraska football fan and later a devoted Nebraska volleyball fan who happily rearranged his life around their schedules. Go Huskers!
Len is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Tabor; children, Stacie (Jason) Muhle of Omaha and Tiffany (Jared) Mackrill of Scottsbluff; grandchildren, Makayla and Mason Muhle and Quinn and Ren Mackrill; stepsisters, Sherry Monard and Trish Hermanson; many cherished nieces and nephews; numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and treasured friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Grace Tabor and Lois and Pierce McDowell; sister, Joan Tabor Gold; and in-laws, Robert and Jean Rubino.
Len will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous heart, infectious sense of humor, and his steadfast devotion to family and community. He was a man of faith and quietly lived out those values in service to others. Len was a one-of-a-kind man who had a gift for leaving you happier than when he found you.
