Roger was born in Gering, Nebraska on May 3, 1934, to Henry and Anna (Herstein) Schaub. Roger graduated from Scottsbluff High School and later attended Scottsbluff Junior College where he played basketball. After college, Roger entered the US Army, training at Fort Bliss, Texas, and then serving in South Korea. Following his service to our country, Roger first accepted a position at Ramsey Feed and then later served for more than three decades as the Unit Manager at Simplot Soilbuilders in Scottsbluff.
He met and married Shirley Ann Helzer on May 15, 1960. Shirley was the love of his life and the two were inseparable. Together they welcomed two children, Scott and Joni, and raised their children in Scottsbluff.
Roger was an avid fisherman, landing a master angler walleye, and supplying trout for the annual Simplot Christmas party. Roger also enjoyed golfing with family, lifelong friends, and coworkers, and spent hours every summer in the garden. Roger and Shirley also had many hobbies that they did together including bowling, country western dancing, and traveling. They both enjoyed their trips with friends to Deadwood and Wendover to play blackjack and slots.
Roger never met a stranger. He would befriend anyone and was known for his generosity, level-headedness, and perpetual positive attitude. He was also active in church leadership but would often (rightfully) give Shirley credit for his contribution. Roger was a wonderful historian and continued to have an excellent memory. Shirley was the love of his life and when she passed last summer, he missed her every single day. Their love and dedication to each other was a testimony to all who knew them. Roger was a wonderful husband and father and also excelled as his role of grandpa and great-grandpa. He and Shirley would follow the grandchildren literally everywhere. Whether it would be baseball, football, basketball, swimming, track, cross-country, speech, or quiz bowl, they would always be there to cheer them on.
Survivors include his son, Scott (Melissa) Schaub; daughter, Joni (Jamie) Worden; grandchildren, Brandon (Amity) Schaub, Michael Schaub, Daniel Schaub, Aubree (Aaron) Hawley, and Luke (Sara) Worden; great-grandchildren, Bella and Dax Schaub, Brynlee and Jase Hawley, and Stone and Ayla Worden; brother, Gordon (Nancy) Schaub; along with other extended relatives and friends.
Roger was preceeded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley; his parents, Henry and Anna Schaub; and his nephew, Cameron Schaub.
Roger’s smile, humility, kindness, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed.
