Sherrie was born February 5, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Peter J. Deines and Lillian M. (Schneider) Deines of Minatare, Nebraska. After graduating in 1964 from Minatare High School, Sherrie married Roger Robbins of Sidney, Nebraska. The couple moved to Saint Joseph, Missouri where their daughter, Renee Annette Robbins, was born.
Sherrie was active in the local church, holding various positions, including Sunday School Superintendent and Youth Group Leader at Marvin McMurry United Methodist Church. Once Renee started grade school, Sherrie took a job with American Family Insurance. She was a devoted parent and supportive friend to all who knew her. Life has a way of testing the human spirit, and after Sherrie’s divorce, she needed a fresh start in a new place where she could test the boundaries of her independence – the mountains called to her. Transferring to Littleton, Colorado with her job at American Family Insurance, she was closer to her parents in Minatare and visited them often. She became an independent, free spirit and loved walking along the North Platte River, going for bike rides, skiing at Winter Park, and dancing with her friends. Sherrie joined St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church where she became a member, and it was through her participation in the choir that she met and married Robert “Bob” Null.
With their own children grown, the two set out on an epic journey, moving, living, and playing in all the ‘C’ states: Thousand Oaks, California and Bristol, Connecticut, before returning and retiring to Westminster, Colorado. Everyone who knew Sherrie experienced a growth of spirit and love, be it family, faith, or flowers; everything and everyone blossomed with her love.
She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, dancing, canoeing, crafting, gardening, camping, and traveling. Some of Sherrie’s and Bob’s favorite locations were camping in the Rocky Mountains, a day at Ventura Beach, California picnicking and body surfing, exploring historic lighthouses on the East Coast, walking beside the Big Thompson River in Estes Park, experiencing the sunset at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon Coast, and visiting family. She embraced her new family and loved getting to know Carolynn and best bud, Dodger, in Portland. She enjoyed her time with Glenn and Heather and supporting their girls Jordan’s and Teagan’s many talents and watching them grow into beautiful young adults. The most difficult part of Sherrie’s journey was being far from Renee and her family, but with memory-filled visits, full of laughter with Gary and Bob until everyone’s sides hurt, playing and snuggling with her grandchildren, Liam and Elina, and frequent notes and phone calls, the distance didn’t seem so far.
Sherrie made such a significant impact on the lives surrounding her: making noodles and butterballs with her mom, driving the roads of Scotts Bluff County while sharing memories with her dad, counting tongs and creating a Baked Alaska dessert with Carolynn, crafting and playing dress up with Jordan and Teagan, visiting and playing games with Glenn and Heather, attending walks to support Liam’s Lollygaggers, following Elina’s dance career, attending an improvised performance of “The Nutcracker” in her living room performed by Liam and Elina, almost sending Gary through the car window after slamming on the breaks for a deer, the countless hugs, supportive words and tears shared with Renee, playing catch with Abby-doodle, and hand-held walks on the beach and sunset drives with Bob. Sherrie’s legacy lives on in all of our memories. “Nothing gold can stay” (Robert Frost) but memories are forever (Renee Sherman).
Sherrie is survived and missed by her loving husband, Robert Null of LaGrande, Oregon; daughter, Renee (Gary) Sherman; grandson, Liam Sherman; granddaughter, Elina Sherman all of St. Joseph, Missouri; step-daughter, Carolynn Null of Portland, Oregon; step-son, Glenn (Heather) Null and their daughters, Jordan and Teagan, of LaGrande, Oregon; and her beautiful dog, Abby, who is now a source of comfort for Bob.
Sherrie was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Lillian Deines; brother, Kenneth Deines; and sister, Lorraine Matzke.
