Steven Haun, age 80, of Gering, Nebraska, passed away at his home on Friday, March 27, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 2, 2026, at WestWay Christian Church in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, with Pastor John Mulholland officiating. Family will be present for a visitation one hour prior. Memorials may be made in care of the WestWay Christian Church. Steve’s memorial service will be livestreamed and recorded on his obituary page, viewable at www.reverencefuneralparlor.com.
Steve was born on June 4, 1945, in Scottsbluff, to Solomon and Hilda (Schmunk) Haun. He grew up in Gering and was a 1963 graduate of Gering High School. He continued his education at Platte Valley Bible College, now known as Summit Christian College.
In 1962, Steve heard a voice that would change his frequency forever. While performing in separate vocal ensembles at a banquet, he laid eyes on Diana Knaub. For Steve, it was "love at first sight,” a rare, perfectly timed harmony that led to their marriage in December of 1966. It was a 59-year duet that included the welcoming of their daughter, Stefani, in 1970.
Steve’s career education began with his father, Solomon, at their family service station and auto repair shop. He worked there from childhood until becoming an owner-operator truck driver in 1971. He drove for Schwartzkopf Trucking and later Nebraska Transport Company until 1984, when he returned to his roots as a full-time, self-employed auto mechanic at S. Haun Repair. Steve began his railroad career in 1995 with Chicago & North Western Railway (later Union Pacific Railroad) and retired as a locomotive engineer in 2013.
He was a devout believer in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and a lifelong member of WestWay Christian Church, formerly the Church at Bryant.
Steve was also a master of the mechanical world. He possessed the rare gift of seeing potential in a broken machine and the patience to bring it back to life. Steve restored many automobiles throughout his lifetime, believing a car should be as mechanically sound as it was beautiful. He also loved motorcycles and assembled several of them for local dealers. His attention to detail and order was his trademark.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Diana; his daughter, Stefani (Jerome) Lackey; granddaughters, Brena (Nick) Berrios, Brooke (Corbin) Getz, and Brylee (TJ) Gorman; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Judah Berrios, Crawford Getz, and two more great-grandchildren on the way; brother, Jack Haun; sister, Marilyn (Skip) Rigby; along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon and Hilda Haun.
